Symmetric Real Spherical Harmonics
Andrzej Kudlicki, Maga Rowicka, Miroslaw Gilski, Zbyszek Otwinowski

Real spherical harmonics are a convenient base for representing electron density in:

  • Rotational searches
  • Building solvent masks
  • EM 3D reconstruction
  • Ab initio phasing

When symmetry is present, this description becomes redundant.

Here we present an algorithm for generating a reduced set of base functions for a given symmetry (crystallographic or not).
